How ya doin? It’s Skydog’s Memorial Bench!
Installed 9-19-14 and christened with coffee 9-20-14
This bench is at the top landing of Stairwell #6 in the northernmost day use/pay parking lot at Cardiff State Beach, according to the Friends of Cardiff and Carlsbad State Beaches. A more accurate description of the location might be, “the top of the stairs at San Elijo State Park next to the showers.” Either way, it’s the only dedicated bench at the top landing, on the north side looking south.
Sitting on the bench, it has a clear view to the south and all the surf breaks. Dan frequently stopped at the south Cardiff State Beach parking lot on his way home from work. It can be tricky to find the entrance to this parking lot, but once you do, it will be easy to find on your next visit. I have 20-year naming rights, so you have plenty of time to find it and sit for a bit. Check out the slide show below.
Memorialized on O’side Pier
Just after the bait shop on the left side of the pier, you’ll see Skydog Highland and Tara Lee Torburn. Spot #213 (Dan’s birthday was 2/13) on the top row.
The Bricks
If you’re standing on Nevada Street, facing the ocean, between the two City of Oceanside buildings, you’ll see a small courtyard with red bricks. Dan and Tara’s brick is on the Southwest section.
Miramar National Cemetery
Located at 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122 is Miramar National Cemetery. You can park by the office and walk, or drive over to section 3 and park along the street. Dan’s headstone is located in Section 3, number 451 (the numbers are on the back of the headstones). Here’s a map of the cemetery grounds.
